For many people with dementia, day to day life can deteriorate into an endless marathon of TV personalities. With listless yet steadfast regularity, this TV rut can erase all desire for activity, leading to decreased appetites, weakened physiology, and increased confusion when trying to discern between reality and the televised dramas.
This month, we’d like to remind you that our loved ones with dementia still retain bits of their former gifts and interests. The longer they can remain connected to activities that require thought and action, even if those activities look different than they once did, we can reduce many of the triggers for decline like insomnia from inactivity during the day, paranoia from too much TV drama, muscle atrophy and even loneliness and all it entails.
Here’s our friend Chris Coelho sharing how he works to reconnect people to former interests. Chris has since moved on to a research position at a top Nashville facility, and we really appreciate his insights into how any of us can help our loved ones navigate memory loss.
