When Vision Problems Hinder Independence

"I wanted to live at home, but I just kept falling.”

“I think I get three more prescriptions every time I go to the hospital.”

“If only I could have seen that cord…”

If you listen to older adults who are having to leave their homes, you understand that avoiding falling is paramount. A single fall can land one in a revolving door of hospital, rehab, more prescriptions and the accompanying fogginess they bring, leading to more falls, hospital and rehab.

While fall prevention is a huge focus—and should be—just installing grab bars in the shower and tossing out the throw rugs doesn’t always address the main problem.

Many falls occur because of poor vision, not just slippery floors.

Addressing the Root

Because eyesight deteriorates gradually, a person with vision loss may not even realize how dangerous their situation has become. Loved ones may notice it before the individual does by observing them squinting, bumping into things, or no longer attempting activities that require detailed visual observation.

A simple eye exam may shed light on how far the vision loss has progressed. Even if it’s substantial, it doesn’t mean the person can’t continue to live safely at home.

A clear understanding of the person’s vision capabilities is crucial, because each situation will be different.

Adapting the Home for Vision Loss

For some folks, all that will be required is better lighting. Keeping night lights, flashlights and bright incandescent bulbs stocked will go far in preventing falls due to poor vision.

But for other people, glare from lights is the worst thing to do to their vision. For others, loss of sight or mobility may be only on one side of the body, requiring accommodations to be made in how the home is set up. These things take trial and error—and a patient, strong back to help move the TV for the umpteenth time so that it’s not too close or too far away.

At Cura, we thrive on the satisfaction of helping clients experience the “Aha” moment when life at home is made simple. Whether it’s helping your family discover the safest way to set up the home for vision loss or choosing the perfect 24/7 care professional, we look forward to seeing how we can help your loved one live happy, healthy and SAFELY at home.
